I was recently trapped in the waiting room of my dentist’s office for over an hour. It was the middle of July and the outside temperature was ninety-two degrees, with high humidity. Because of the intense heat, I was dressed in shorts, tank top and flip flops. It did not occur to me to wear a winter coat and bundle up in a hat and mittens. Because I dressed for the weather, I nearly froze to death. When I first stepped inside the dentist’s office, the air conditioning actually felt refreshing. I signed in and sat down in a very uncomfortable plastic chair, with the cold air from an HVAC supply vent blowing right at me. I immediately began to shiver. I switched seats four separate times, attempting to escape the blast of the air conditioning. There was nowhere in the waiting room that was not in the direct line of the freezing cold air. I noticed that all the people working at the dentist’s office were dressed in long pants and long sleeves. I can’t imagine why the thermostat was set so dreadfully low. I’m sure it cost a fortune to maintain such an extremely cold temperature, especially with the exterior door continually opening. By the time I was called in for my appointment, I was downright angry. I already hate going to the dentist and resent the high costs of a simple teeth cleaning. At the very least, the dentist should make sure that his patients are comfortable, and not leave them shivering in the waiting room for over an hour.
When my husband, Robert, and I decided to build our own home from the ground up, we weren’t really prepared for all of the many decisions and challenges. We are both extremely handy and knew that we could manage the construction of the home. We realized that we’d need to bring in professionals to complete the plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems. However, trying to coordinate the design and implementation of these systems was difficult. The placement of pipes and drains, ductwork and electrical outlets was crucial. The plumbing, wiring, heating and cooling all impact each other, and yet we were trying to deal with three separate contractors. First, our plumber went on vacation and could not be reached. Then, the electrician was involved in another project and caused us a major delay. The HVAC contractor was fantastic, right from the start, and was willing to work around our schedule. He provided a customized design for the duct system, recommended the style of HVAC equipment, and actually fabricated the ductwork in an in-house sheet metal shop. When the electrician and plumber continued to be a problem, we discovered that our HVAC contractor was qualified to handle both the pipes and the wiring. This simplified everything, because we no longer needed to mediate between three different companies. With one company overseeing the entire project, everything proceeded much more quickly and smoothly. It was a relief to finally have the septic, wiring, duct system, pipes, furnace and air conditioner in place. Robert and I were anxious to close up the walls and tackle the finishing touches, so that we could schedule a date to move in.
I live in a southern area of the country, where the weather is typically quite warm. The spring and summer months are so hot and humid that there is no way to get by without an effective cooling system. I typically rely on the air conditioner for about eight to nine months per year. The installation of a heating system is not necessary and an expense that I was always happy to avoid. When I built a new home, I did some research into the various types and options for cooling systems. I also consulted with a local HVAC contractor, who recommended that I invest into an electric heat pump. Since a heat pump is rather expensive, I figured he was just hoping to make extra money from the job. However, once I learned more about the benefits of a heat pump, I was sold. A heat pump is actually more energy efficient than a conventional cooling system but operates very similarly. The equipment simply moves heat from one location to another, creating a cooling effect. During the cooler months, the heat pump reverses operation, finds ambient warmth in outdoor air, and pumps it into the home. I now enjoy having the ability to heat my home when the outside temperature cools down. Because the system is wonderfully efficient, it doesn’t cost a lot to maintain perfect temperature, and I can switch between heating and cooling with the touch of a button. The heat pump requires very little maintenance, operates quietly, and is effective at dehumidifying the home. Although it costs more to purchase and install the heat pump, it was definitely worth it.
You heard it right, “snowmaggedeon” is a thing and it happened to my family and I last winter. It was a very cold, yet silent morning when a gigantic and persistent snow fall dawned on the midwest. This had to be the only time in all of the years that I had been living here, that I really wanted to live somewhere else! Every midwesterner knows that winters here are not nothing to be played, so that’s why it’s important to have an efficient heating system at home. The day before, there was a snowfall of four inches, that was certainly enough to strand motorcyclists or even public transportation. The next day, the snow had wreaked havoc on our town, and in a very unforgiving way so I made sure to keep or heating unit operating unit it blew over. Families including my own, were snowed into their homes without any way out. While my wife sat inside frightened, I was just aggravated. “What in my past life did I do to deserve this?” was all that I thought the entire time. Luckily, we our heating system saved the day and kept all us warm during the storm. While we all watched the snow continuously fall outside of our windows, the hot air that circulated my home made me imagine a being on the beach at a tropical location with a sangria in hand. It’s no question that I will be considering moving my family to a new location, because things have truly gotten out of control and I’m sure would be even worse without any heating.
In my opinion, warmer weather is the only reason to move when retiring. They literally only have one more year left, and they have been actively planning all of the locations they desire to live. It’s admirable how long they have been together after almost 30 years! Some folks remain happy where they live once they retire, but my parents really want something different. Currently, they are staying in in a small town where the winter weather can be really extreme. I think the older that they get, the more important it is to pay close attention to their health as many times, the season can be really dangerous. They often experience winter storms and there was even one time where the roads were so bad, that the entire town was closed for the day, so having a HVAC is very important in these time. It’s really unfortunate that their heating system isn’t the best. For a long time, I have begged them to move, and what better time than when it is finally time for them to retire. Now, we can all get what we want. I have doing some online research and found a few places in Florida and New Mexico that are quiet and without all of the noisy city clutter. I have researched HVAC systems just in case their place isn’t equipped with heating and cooling. I really hope that they will be able to manage their heating and cooling system one they move, because if not, I might have to consider moving as well. That would be a huge life transition for sure!
I have been apart of a book club for four years now and I absolutely love it! Some book clubs have themes, but as for ours, we like to take a spin on whatever suggestion a member throws out there! I am member of six in a group and all of the women are very supportive of each other. We are a pretty small group— a journalist, fifth grade school teacher, dermatologist, and a writer, but it’s exactly everything that I had hoped for. Once a month, we meet at local coffee shops, library conference rooms, or occasionally a book club member’s home. I usually liked being at someone’s warm place with the toasty heating system operating or my own place nibbling on cheese and drinking a nice glass of wine during our conversation. I gain a lot of insight in our meetings and usually feel really comfortable, but yesterday was mind boggling as it felt that the cooling system was on full blast! We had met at a coffee shop near one of our member’s home and boy, was it frosty inside! During the entire meeting, I was rubbing my hands and blowing my warm breath into them. It had seemed that everyone was fine without feeling any heat and came prepared, as everyone was wearing a light jacket, which made no sense to me, as it was hot as lava outside! I really think that perhaps, the heating system in the place had broken down. We are planning our next meeting place, and I’m going to be the one to choose this time.
My wife and I were about to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We had found out ahead of time that our friends were going to throw us a huge party. While that was nice, we really just wanted to celebrate just the two of us. So we planned to go on a date just the two of us about a week before the big party. We had everything planned out! We went to the restaurant my wife picked out, and took our seats. We immediately noticed that the air conditioner was not working. I called over the head waiter to find out what the problem was. He told me that the air conditioner had died out about a half an hour before we showed up. He apologized profusely, and said that our meal would be complimentary. Although that was a nice gesture, it was much too hot in there without an air conditioner. My wife and I decided to go to a different place that had a working air conditioner. We drove around for about an hour in our air conditioned car, but we couldn’t find any place that had seating available. We eventually settled on a fast food place. We could tell as soon as we walked inside that the air conditioner was on super high! We didn’t mind one bit. The HVAC system was a welcoming invitation to us. It just happened to be the fast food place that we had our first date at. What a coincidence! We ended up with romance and a working air conditioner!
My friends and I were big time card players. We tried to gather at least once a month for a big poker game. It was a whole lot of fun, and it enabled us to catch up with each other. Life had become so busy since we all became “adults,” and it felt good to just hang out once in awhile and act like kids again. We tried to gather on Fridays when we could. I just recently had my HVAC system upgraded, so we were sure to have a cool night next time we got together. Last time was a disaster! My air conditioner had broken the week before, so my house was like a furnace! Me and my friends ended up sweating all night without an air conditioner. I called an HVAC technician to come over and inspect my air conditioner. There was a major issue with the compressor, but it was nothing that the HVAC technician couldn’t handle. He was able to quickly repair it, and he even showed me some energy saving tips in the process! This was great because it prepared me for the next game night, which was scheduled to take place this coming Friday. I was ready this time! My HVAC technician made sure my air conditioner would not fail this time. Friday night rolled around, my friends arrived, and my air conditioner kept us cool all night. The game night was a success! My air conditioner actually worked better than ever! My HVAC technician was very good and was a gigantic help.
I was in the process of completely renovating my entire home. I was planning on painting the interior and exterior a nice off white color. I figured that would go with pretty much any kind of design I decided on. I also needed to upgrade my plumbing and electricity. One of the most important things I wanted to do, was install a nice old fashioned fireplace in my living room. I had a very expensive HVAC system, complete with smart thermostat and zone control heating and cooling system elements, but I thought a fireplace would really add to the ambience of my home. One day last week I went to my local stone quarry to hunt down just the right type of stones. I wanted my fireplace to be so fancy it would be featured in design magazines! I soon found the perfect stone and called up my HVAC technician. This guy was amazing! I was referred to him by a close friend who recently had his own fireplace installed. My HVAC technician was a creative genius! It didn’t take him long to show up at the stone quarry. The HVAC technician looked over the stones I had picked out, and a huge smile crept up on his face. The HVAC technician said it would turn out to be the best fireplace he ever designed! I couldn’t wait to see the results! His crew members helped him load the stones into the truck, and off we went to finish the measurements for my fireplace. This was going to be great!
I had to take my two kittens to the vet last week. That was always quite the adventure, to say the least. You never knew what to expect from one of those trips. One time there was a person in the waiting room that had a pet duck! Those trips were always a little rough for me. I hated to see my kittens in a state of panic as they sat in their cat carrier on the drive over there. When we got to the office last week, my kittens were especially feisty. I think this had to do with the fact that the HVAC system at the vet’s office was going haywire. I had noticed last time we were here that the air conditioner was straining to work. You could tell by the sound the air conditioner was making. I could tell easily, because I used to be an HVAC technician. My ears were trained to pick up on things like that in regard to HVAC systems. Anyway, this time the air conditioner wasn’t working at all. I decided to be proactive. I went up to the front desk, and told them I used to be an HVAC technician. I offered to take a look at the air conditioner while I waited for the vet to be done examining my kittens. The clerk happily agreed, and led me to the air conditioner. I was able to find the problem with ease. After I was done, the clerk turned on the air conditioner with their thermostat, and the air conditioner was working fine within minutes! My kittens were soon out of the examination room, and I had done my good deed for the day!
