Ever since my husband and I have gotten married, my in-laws have tried to give us unsolicited advice on everything in our lives. From types of dish soaps to HVAC maintenance to birth control, they have an opinion on everything. While their thoughts on my reproductive health were not appreciated, we did learn a lot from what they had to say about our HVAC systems. My in-laws have lived in the same home for over 20 years, and they have never had a problem with their air conditioner or their heater. They attribute their success to the regular HVAC maintenance that they receive from their local HVAC repair shop. As soon as they moved into their home, they enrolled in the HVAC service plan. The HVAC service plan guaranteed them a regular HVAC tune-up every year, and gave them discounts and priority service on all other HVAC products. As a wedding gift, they even offered to enroll us in the same HVAC service plan that they use, and I’m sure glad they did. On his first visit, the HVAC technician found a lot of problems with our air conditioning system. Our air ducts were totally clogged and desperately needed cleaning. He came back later the following day equipped with a long vacuum hose apparatus to thoroughly clean out our air ducts. After that, my husband noticed a big difference in our indoor air quality and have been breathing easy ever since! Even though their advice is sometimes very annoying, I guess my in-laws were right about having our HVAC system serviced regularly.

It took a long time for me to fly from the nest, it was kind of a family joke how I was waiting out my parents for the house. My brother and sister and I all feel we have a right to the house, but I knew I would leave one day and I always warned my parents that when I go, I’ll be gone. And I was, when I moved away I moved over 900 miles away, it was pretty spur of the moment too. The change was overwhelming in the beginning. I left home mid winter, I went from warming my milk for coffee on our wood stove, to adjusting the thermostat to cool in the middle of January. The foreignness of those moments made me ache for home all over again. The thermostat itself was a foreign object to me, I still believe there are too many setting options for how few buttons are present, I don’t necessarily understand it, but at least I can work it now. I am planning my first trip home and I can’t wait. I’m liking it down here and slowly adjusting, but I look forward to the sights and sounds of home. It’ll be cold again when I go back. We rarely use the thermostat there, it’s one of those old timey dial thermostats but it works just fine. Throughout the day you can hear the radiators kick on, the sound of oil going through like leaking water and a creaky clicking sound. And don’t forget the splinters from lugging the wood in, I never did get used to wearing gloves for that. I can’t wait.
I spent a couple of weeks down south at my Uncles this past summer. I was looking relocate down that way and as I looked and explored and figured my life out, I was able to stay with my family. The climate was very foreign to me, it was then I realized how well I have incorporated the northern climate into my daily activities and there was a lot more to adapt to than I ever would have guessed. For example, the benefit of fresh air coming through open windows. It’s the opposite down here, an open window in summer lets the air conditioning out and the hot humid sticky air in, it is not refreshing at all. Back home we have a giant rose bush right outside our living room windows, the cool summer breeze fills the house with the perfumed scent of english roses. I was brought up to hang dry my clothes, but hang drying outside is impossible with the humidity. The question I faced, was how to adapt my needs and habits into this environment? With a little research and creativity I had a few ideas. The importance of clean air filters became a priority and HVAC maintenance services to ensure clean and purified air. Second, the use of scented essential oils. Applying it to the air filters and after cleaning around the air vents and as far as I can get inside the air ducts fills the home with smell of garden roses. I hang dry clothes inside opposed to outside, and sometimes they benefit from the garden roses.
A couple weeks during the summer I will house sit for this woman who’s a friend of a friend, it’s really how I got the gig. It is such a privilege to housesit for her, she has the most beautiful garden and the most delicious green beans, strawberries, and lettuce, and spinach. My favorite part is munching on the green beans while watering all the plants. She asked me to come for two weeks in the winter this year. While I was familiar with her house already she had me come over early on to explain a little about her finicky heating system and hot water system. Her primary source of heat is the wood stove, she has a smallish house so it suffices in the winter once you get it cranking. The thermostat to the radiators was behind her African wall hanging and tucked behind her dresser was a small space heater. I definitely felt there were plenty heating sources to stay warm for the next couple of weeks. It definitely got cold enough a few nights to need all three heating sources going at once. She warned that sometimes during a shower the hot water will turn off and in the event that happens, be sure to shut off the water and turn it back on. She can’t explain it, but perhaps it resets the hot water, but it always works for her. I am always weary when using someone else’s heat or air conditioning, I made sure to crank the wood stove so that would carry the burden of the cold, and there’s no heat like a wood stove heat.
After years working the retail side of a fine woodenware small town touristy shop, I requested to work back in the factory. Donna warned about the lack of any kind of heating or cooling system. She said there were only a few weeks in the off seasons the factory was bearable, other than that there is no a/c for the summer time and there is no heating during the winter. But I prefer the early hours, and I would much prefer a lack of heating or cooling equipment to the mindless questions and neediness of the customers. I enjoy the task oriented nature of the factory, and we’re all so involved and focused on our job and with all machinery going you can’t worry about small talk or mindless conversations. It is most certainly an upgrade. But the summers are worst! Luckily we start early enough to beat the majority of the heat but with the all the machinery running and the lifting and lugging, it is hot and sweaty work. The fans we have set up help, but they make things messy as well. I knew what I got into so I won’t complain about the heat or cold, but what I will say is next door could use a humidistat. The house next door is used for staining and oiling and although it was once used as a house, there is not central air, there is no heating or cooling system of any kind. All that oil in the summer soaks into the air, and in turn soaks into our skin, our hair, we breathe it in. The heat makes that oil room unbearably humid in the summer! Still, I’ll take that over customer relations any day.
